Katniss Everdeen
Katniss Everdeen seems like an ordinary and poor girl living in the Seam, someone who desperately tries to keep her family alive. When Katniss was eleven, her father died in a mine explosion leaving Katniss, her mother, and her younger sister, Primrose, to fend for themselves. Her mother was in such a state of shock and depression that Katniss was left to feed the family. At first, they barely survived but after seeing the first dandelion of spring, it became a symbol to Katniss. She began to use her knowledge of hunting and plants that her father had taught her before the accident, to keep her family alive. Illegally, she crossed the fence at the edge of the meadow into the lush forest to hunt and collect all the food she needed to feed her family and some extra to trade.
Primrose was only seven when their father died. Katniss became the overprotective sister, determined to keep Prim as well-fed and safe as possible. While Katniss is loving and caring towards Prim, she acts very cold and heartless to her mother, after Mrs. Everdeen retreated into a dark blanket of depression. Katniss has one friend, Gale that she shares everything with. To everyone else she is mostly unsocial and unfriendly. Katniss’ only joy is hunting and her sister, and she has little time for anything else.
