District 12 is the last and poorest district in Panem; it is located the farthest away from the capitol, the head of Panem. District 12 is in charge of providing the capitol and the districts with coal mined from what formerly was known as the Appalachian mountain range. District 12 is comprised of four parts, The Seam, The Hob, The meadow/forest, and the market area.
Important Areas of District 12
The Seam
- The Seam: The Seam is the poor part of the district, and is home to the workers in the coal mines. The houses are described as squat and grey and are run down and shabby. The streets are dusty with coal and are black. The air is dusty with dust from the mines and almost everything is covered in a layer of dust and grime.
- The Hob: The Hob is the black market located in an abandoned factory in the Seam. The Hob is a source of life and resources for many people of the district. It is known by everyone, including the peacekeepers but they turn a blind eye because the hunters often sell their kill to them. Market people also trade and buy goods from The Hob and they usually get their best trades here.
- The Meadow: The Meadow is a scruffy field that is located just outside of the Seam. It is a small meadow that separates the Seam from the electrified fence that keeps the citizens of district 12 inside the district and the wild animals out of the district. The fence is rarely on, but it's presence alone intimidates most of the citizens. The forest is full of plants and and animals that hunters are able to obtain.
- The Market: The Market is the rich portion of the district that sells goods and services to the wealthier people of the district who can afford it. Some of the shops in the market are the Butcher Shop, the Apothecary, the Bakery, and the Candy Store. Also in the market is the Square. The Square houses the Justice Building and City Hall. The Market hosts all important events in the district like executions and the reaping. Most citizens of the Seam usually don't enter The Market unless required, as it is daunting to be surrounded by wealth.
